Basic Education is a 1937 educational concept designed by Mahatma Gandhi. The concept was based on his experiences with the British education system. He saw the Indian children culturally alienated and criticized career oppressions, contempt for manual labor, the emergence of a new elite and growing industrialization and urbanization.
The three pillars of Gandhi’s education are lifelong, social and holistic education. For Gandhi, education is the amoral development of personality, a process that lasts all his life.
According to the International Standard Classification of Education (ISCED), basic education comprises primary education (first stage of basic education) and lower secondary education (second stage). In countries (developing countries in particular), Basic Education often includes also pre-primary education and/or adult literacy programs.
